UNESCO Miyajima (Hiroshima)

History and tradition, blue sea, mountains and greenery … replete with attractive highlights.

Miyajima is a small island less than an hour outside the city of Hiroshima. Miyajima is most famous for its giant torii gate, which at high tide seems to float on top of the water. The sight is ranked as one of Japan’s three best views.

In 1996, the World Heritage Committee officially inscribed Itsushima Shrine as a World Cultural Heritage.  The area designed for World Heritage comprises 431 hectares.
